Google Suggest Becomes More Local and Better with Spelling

Google has just rolled out two nifty features of its Google Suggest service – a more localized search suggest that boils down to metro areas and an auto-correction of spellings for name search.  These two new features aimed to give you a faster search experience when typing your search keywords as well as lessen the amount of time you devote typing these searches. The localization feature is actually a spin-off of previous Google Suggest feature which was limited by country searches. The new Google Suggest local feature was tailored to specific metro areas in the U.S.  This means that when you type in a specific keyword Google search immediately analyzes your search term based on your location. Google gave a good example when searching for the keyword -”bulls.”  If you are currently located in Chicago will typing this keyword, Google will quickly pull out it’s suggested keywords based on all things about Chicago.  The assumption is that you are looking for Chicago Bulls-related infromation via Google search. So, all the terms suggested by Google will be related to the Chicago Bulls team. The other new feature of Google Suggest has something to do with spelling enhancement. So, when you are searching for a general term such as “composer” Google will pull out several search suggestion which include the name of the composer. Basically the new feature makes use of the concept that people often know something about a person besides the approximate spelling of his name. Aside from this new Google Suggest feature, Google also rolled out an auto-correct  feature which lead you to the online entry for that keyword even though the spelling is correct.       Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Google Adds Buzz to Maps for Mobile App for BlackBerry

For a long time now, I’ve been trying to use Google Buzz on my Nexus One Maps App but to no avail.  For some reason I can’t get it to work. So, I was quite surprised  how easy it was to activate Google Buzz on the Maps for Mobile 4.0 app for my BlackBerry Bold 9700. This came after Google updated its Maps for Mobile App for Blackberry devices to version 4.0. And together with Google Buzz, Google has also added some other cool features to the app. To use Google Buzz on Google Maps for BlackBerry, simply fire up the app, select  Layers > Buzz. You can then start posting location updates to your Google Buzz account. It’s a pretty cool application. Something that could compete with Foursquare and other location-based social networking apps. Google also added search by voice to Maps for BlackBerry. While the Map apps’ main menu is open simply press and hold the green “call” button on your BlackBerry device, and start speaking your search. The app lets you search for establishment’s name, addresses and generic search keywords. Other useful features of  Google Maps 4.0 for BlackBerry include – search suggestion, starring of places you’ve visited and syncronization with your dekstop Google maps, Mobile Labs, and the facility for viewing nearby places. To get Google Maps for BlackBerry, simply point your device’s browser to m.google.com/maps, download and install the app from there. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Yahoo Wants to Buy Foursquare for $100 Million

Among the location-based social networking startups that are making waves right now, I’ve always believed that Foursquare has the biggest potential to make it big, if it is not that big right now. Foursquare has every good things going for them – increasing usage, new mobile features here and there, and of course prospective buyers including Yahoo. In fact, Yahoo may seem to be the most serious among  the Internet players who wants to snag the hot social mobile platform. According to Business Insider Yahoo’s M&A folks are currently deciding whether to buy Foursquare at $100 million or not. While Yahoo has been seriously contemplating on a possible acquisition of Foursquare, the folks at Foursquare on the other hand are also busy talking with other interested buyers such as Apple, Facebook and Twitter. Don’t expect Google to join the fray since Google already has Google Buzz and Google Maps which offer the same service as Foursquare. What’s interesting though if indeed Foursquare wants to sell out is that it may be too early in the game. And besides, some VCs are currently competing on the right to fund Foursquare, at a high valuation of around $80 million. What do you think? Is this just another case of start up creating some noise to up the company’s valuation? Or is it really time for Foursquare to sell out? Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
