Google Changes Name to Topeka : April Fools

Woke up this morning to the rather strange announcement from Google that the company has now changed its name to Topeka. In honor of Topeka, Kansas … the town that had changed its name to Google. Confused? So are we. :/ From the Official Google Blog : Early last month the mayor of Topeka, Kansas stunned the world by announcing that his city was changing its name to Google. We’ve been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture. Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1AM (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka. We didn’t reach this decision lightly; after all, we had a fair amount of brand equity tied up in our old name. But the more we surfed around (the former) Topeka’s municipal website, the more kinship we felt with this fine city at the edge of the Great Plains. In fact, Topeka Google Mayor Bill Bunten expressed it best: “Don’t be fooled. Even Google recognizes that all roads lead to Kansas, not just yellow brick ones.” Ok, so today is April 1st and yes, this is an April Fools Joke …. APRIL FOOLS! (and a pretty obvious one at that). But it’s refreshing to see that Google, which is not just a search engine anymore and is a major tech. communications and media conglomerate, still has a sense of humor. Google Receives Overwhelming Response to Call for Fiber Network Host

With the deadline for Google’s call for request for information on various communities to host their fiber network project already closed, Google has reportedly receive 194,000 individual responses and around 1, 100 community responses.  That only goes to show that people want Google to build its fiber network project no matter what the stakes will be for their communities. Or is it more because of the fact that Google’s presence will bring more positive impacts to the community than the negative ones? The Official Google Blog is also reporting how flattering some of the RFIs that Google received were. Some are through YouTube videos, public rallies, and even Facebook groups.  And over the coming months, Google will be reviewing all the responses to determine where to build possibly its next biggest project. Site visits, meeting with local officials and consulting with third-party organizations will be conducted until Google has finally selected the community where the fiber network will be hosted. Hopefully, this is before the year ends. Google plans to build the foundation for its broadband network that could reach as much as 50, 000 communities and around 500,000 people. Here’s a geographic representation where those responses received by Google came from. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Google Search Results Get the Star Treatment

Google’s long-standing effort on making its search engine results pages more personalized continue with the roll out of a new feature – marking search results with cutesy, yellow star icons. Actually, Stars are replacing  the SearchWiki, which according to the Official Google blog didn’t get to be appreciated by users especially since it changes the order of Google’s organic search results. So, as an alternative way of marking and rediscovering web content provided by Google search results – marking them with Stars is a more lighweight and flexible solution. To mark a search result with the star icon, you simply need to click the star marker. Once marked, the next time you do a search, all your previous starred items related to your current search will appear in a special list at the top of  your results. The Star feature syncs with Google Bookmarks and Google Toolbar. And while you are browsing the web, you can quickly click on the star icon to favorite a webpage and place it on the list of items that you have starred. Google is rolling out the Star feature in search globally in the next few days. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Google Search Results Get the Star

Google Integrates MySpace to Search, But Not Proud of it

Google seemed to have quietly implemented MySpace Real-Time Search API just now. The announcement was actually made by MySpace so I checked out the Official Google Blog if there was any update about this but didn’t find any.  Probably because it’s too early or maybe Google just don’t want to make a big fuzz about this? Anyway, the MySpace folks are pretty much excited about it nonetheless. In fact, they claim that the integration  is the first real-time integration of social networking platform to Google Search. Well perhaps they don’t consider Twitter as a social networking site so they might have missed the fact that Google has also integrated Twitter streams to search recently. If you’re curious about it, you might want to try searching and find out if you will be getting live updates from MySpace users such as news, photos, and blog posts as part of the Google search results. MySpace streams will be displayed only if they were made public by MySpace members. MySpace contents that will be displayed as search results will be ranked based on the latest and of the highest relevancy to the subject of your searces. Like This Post?
