It’s not always an obvious connection, but the content on your website affects its usability. How? The easiest way to think about it is by putting yourself directly in the user’s seat. Think about it. You go to a website that provides search engine optimization services. Although you might decide to hire the person or company behind the site, right now you’re in the research phase. You’re looking for resources and information to help you make decisions about how to best optimize your website, not necessarily who the best person or company is to help you with that. When you get to the site, you’re looking for helpful information, like what search engine optimization is all about, tips for improving the performance of your site, and first steps in optimizing your site for search engines. What would happen if you got there and only saw a brochure site – no information, no articles or blog entries, only information about the company or person who provided the search engine optimization services? If you’re in the research phase, you keep looking. You move on to someone who actually provides helpful content on the topic. When you find that person or company, you stick around, combing through the available content, until you make a decision about how you want to proceed. Chances are, if you decide to hire someone, you’re going to at least give that person or company a shot at helping you, right? Why? First, they know their stuff and have established themselves as an expert on the topic. Second, they’ve proven that they want to help their customers and followers by providing free resources and valuable content. Finally, they’ve proven (even subconsciously) that they value their own time and screen their clients by letting the content speak for their knowledge and expertise, as well as their philosophy surrounding that topic (if you don’t agree with them, chances are, you move on to someone else, saving you both valuable time and a lot of frustration). Content increases your website’s usability by giving visitors exactly what they want: Information on the topic of your expertise, Faith in you as a service provider by demonstrating your knowledge and commitment to service, and Pre-screening to see if you’re the service provider for them. Especially in the beginning, it can be counter-intuitive to think about “giving away the cow” by providing an arsenal of free information and advice, but these days, you have to think about the options. Either establish yourself as the go-to expert that is the most knowledgeable source on the topic, or your site visitors will leave very quickly in search of someone else who fits the bill. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
Most of us know (and use) Google’s synonym operator [~term] What it basically does is instructs Google to include more synonyms in the search results and use the bold font for them (Google uses synonyms for generating search results anyway but this operator makes it focus on the synonyms). I mentioned the operator many times to emphasize how useful it might turn for keyword research – the operator comes particularly handy when used before some most generic terms. Besides, you can exclude the base term fro the results and thus focus it on synonyms only; for example [~help -help] search will include: tips, FAQ, tutorial , etc: There’s the way to always see those synonyms while you search Google with Google Semantics FireFox addon. What it basically does is: Grabs your search term, Adds ~ before it and searches Google; Extracts the synonyms Google used in bold; Displays the list before your initial search results. You thus instantly see the list of synonyms right before your search results and can browse further (click any of the synonyms and you’ll be taken to new search results page). Naturally, the tool works best for generic (one-word) search queries because apparently the tool only inserts operator before the first word in the search query phrase: The tool can be easily turned on/off from the navigation menus: More tools to research (Google) synonyms: Keyword Research : Research Synonyms of Any Terms Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
If you’re fond of searching for great images and photos available on the web, most often you’d probably encounter search results which don’t give you the option for more sizes available for those images. The folks at Microsoft Bing knew this and so they are rolling out a new feature of Bing image search which actually lets you find other available sizes of images. Bing’s “ Find more sizes ” option not only lets you find different sizes of a particular image yield by your search but other available formats of that image as well. So, the next time you use Bing’s image search, you can click on that “Find more sizes” option to get a page listing where all of the “same” images appear online in various format, resolution or minor editing. You will also see how these images have been used, that is whether the image was used for mockups, editing, cropping, framing and more. This way, you’d know exactly which image is appropriate for your needs and you don’t need to click on the image search results one by one.
Driving traffic to your website or Fan page through Facebook advertising is becoming a popular trend these days. And for good reason too! Facebook is easily capable of sending you thousands of highly targeted visitors! But with all of the advertising Facebook users are subjected to, what can you do to make your ad stick out? Traditionally, Facebook ad click-through rates (CTRs) are pretty horrible. From my research I’ve seen that an average performing ad will have about a 0.02% CTR. A few weeks ago when I had decided that I wanted to use Facebook ads to drive awareness to a contest I was running called RavenHunt , I found my ads falling into that average category (or worse!). I had setup these two ads: The “Play RavenHunt and Win!” ad had a CTR of 0.017%, and the “Win a Free FlipHD Camera!” advertisement’s CTR was higher at 0.022%. Not bad CTRs by Facebook standards, but I wanted something more. So I asked myself, “Self, if you were the target audience for these ads and were putzing around on Facebook – what would make you click on an ad?” What I wasn’t considering was that my target audience (Internet Marketers) are used to these types of ads. In fact, they are the type of people who create ads just like these. So that’s when I decided to get silly. People love to laugh, and it was my theory that if you had a funny enough ad you’d be able to increase your CTRs. Additionally, I knew that I needed images that naturally drew a person’s attention to them. I needed kittens and puppies. And that’s when I created these two ads that doubled my CTRs: The “Puppies Are Awesome” ad had a CTR of 0.04% and the “This is a cat.” ad was just shy of that at “0.039%”. So by adding some fun to my Facebook ads, my CTRs increased. That got me thinking again – is there a way to combine the two approaches and still maintain a higher CTR? And that’s when I created the ad, “A Game for SEOs by SEOs”: This ad had a 0.06% CTR and didn’t go overboard on the silliness. Instead, it spoke to it’s target audience more appropriately, and still had a less than standard headline. It just goes to show that with the right creativity and the right amount of effort, you can make significant differences to your Facebook ad campaigns. Now if only I can get that number up to 0.1%. Stay tuned. Taylor Pratt is the Product Marketing Manager at Raven Internet Marketing Tools . We are also having a new website being built so another SEO favourite URL’s. This article will share my leanings from my sleepless nights and epic amount of research into making sure it didn’t go wrong. After my research I decided to not listen to what I read and decided to change our domain name and page paths all in one hit. I bet you’re thinking “That’s suicide”, well yes but my results further on may surprise some.
I’ve looked at a few tools allowing you to research on-page links like this post on extracting links from a page based on their placement and exporting links from a page to Excel . Today I am reviewing one more tool to analyze on-page links (both external and internal). FireLinkReport is a Firebug extension that allows to see and analyze all links on the currently open page. First, you will need to install Firebug (if you haven’t already). Once you are done, install the addon and activate it by right-clicking on the Firebug icon in the status bar and choosing “Enable all panels”. Go to any page, open the Firebug and click LINKs. Run the report to see all the links used on the current page grouped in 6 categories: Internal and external Internal only; External only; Absolute and relative; Absolute only; Relative only: You can slightly adjust the report by: Displaying all links as absolute for easier navigating through report, Turning off/on displaying non-page links such as javascript, mailto, ftp, etc. Turning off/on displaying links to labels on the same page. Powerful Firebug search function is also implemented which allows you to quickly find URL you are looking for in the list. With a single click you can highlight any link in the browser window. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
