What I am going to share with you is not new, but I am surprised at how many people do not use this time saving source. Ping.fm is a resource that I want everyone to know about. If you aren’t using it then you need to rethink the reason why. If you are using this wonderful tool then maybe I can share with you some more helpful tips to help in your successes. In there own words: “Ping.fm is a simple and FREE service that makes updating your social networks a snap!” To me the best part is that the service is free and you can post from anywhere with their mobile, instant messenger and email apps. They also work along with hundreds of other 3rd party apps to make updating your status simple and fast. Ping.fm was recently acquired by Seesmic making the service much more powerful. You can send an update and it can be submitted instantly to 50+ social networks including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Ning, WordPress, TypePad, Yammer, Status.net and many more. My favorite part about using this valuable resource is that I can post from my iPhone from anywhere sharing with my friends and family something cool. For example, I recently sent an update to all my friends to over 20 of my social networks right from my phone. The update was sent from the beautiful mountains of Utah stating that I had just finished a Half Marathon. Here is a very short video I created showing how easy it is to sign up and start using Ping.fm today: There is also a trick to update your Google Buzz account via Ping.fm and here are the steps: 1. Of course you must have a Ping.fm account, sign up here – http://ping.fm/ 2. Add Gtalk by clicking “Add Network” at the http://ping.fm/networks/ page 3. Next enter your email address and password associated with your Google buzz account then click submit: 4. And for the last step, you need to add Gtalk as a connected service by logging into your Google Buzz account. See images below for steps: That is it, your Ping.fm posts will now automatically post to your Google Buzz account. Most other social networks are much easier to add as you can see in the video I shared above. There are some things you need to know with using Ping.fm as a social media tool. You need to remember that it is simply a tool that will help save you time. It is not an automated tool that will make you millions or get you more followers necessarily. I see many people abuse the tool to the point that they are not being social anymore with their friends and followers. As we know, Social Media is all about the conversation and being social. If all you are doing is submitting updates and not a part of the discussion then you will loose out on what social media really is. Here are some helpful tips and reminders to save time but still be social: Only use Ping.fm as a status update service and not your only means of connecting to your social networks Post your status updates and make sure you still login to your social network profiles to be a part of the dialogue Don’t overdue it with your submissions, you will loose a lot of friends and followers this way Use other tools to help you in the conversation (e.g. Seesmic , Hootsuite , or Tweetdeck ) In conclusion, Ping.fm is simply a tool for us as marketers and individuals to use to help us save time when conversing and sharing stuff with our friends and followers. This free resource has the ability to help us be more productive if we use it correctly and wisely. Bear in mind that any tool can be abused, so just be careful. Also always remember to have fun. Easier Annotate, Recap and Re-Blog Pages with Yooper (FireFox)
If you are an active blogger, you must be reading and processing plenty of information daily. You save some of this information by copying-pasting to whichever notes you are managing or by bookmarking the page or saving the link. You go by most of the information to forget about it forever. With such flood of the information you should have plenty of hacks on how to process it quickly and efficiently. Today I am adding one more to your arsenal: a tool for fun web annotating. Yooper is a nice FireFox addon that lets you easily highlight text on the page and the easily save it online. The best features of the tool are those that allow to quickly copy all page highlights and also to easily search through all your previously made highlights. Lets see it in action. Install the addon here , re-start your browser and notice a new toolbar in your FireFox status bar: The first thing you want to do is to login to Yooper using your open ID (I was using Google). Once you are logged in, you will notice that the very first icon in the Yooper toolbar becomes green. Now, just go test it. Open any page and highlight key sentences and phrases as you read. You will see that parts of the text you highlight becomes yellow (you can change the default color if you want to): Once done, click the green icon in the toolbar and choose “View the summary”: You will be taken to the page summary where you can see all your previous highlights, copy any of them and share any of them: You can search the highlights (the feature runs pretty smoothly!): Some points you need to be aware of: The tool won’t highlight the text if you copy it (it is assumed that you selected the text for another purpose); You can disable automatic highlighting (Which is what I ended up doing because there was too much “extra” highlighting I didn’t need); The tool is highly customizable: you can change the color, disable auto-highlighting, etc. I wasn’t able to get some of the features work properly (for example, “Share by email” link doesn’t copy the highlights to email body) but overall the tool turned out quite useful. Better Search with Web Search Pro (FireFox)
Web Search Pro is an awesome tool I wish I had discovered earlier. It’s a FireFox addon that adds quite a few features around your FireFox search box . 1. Group search engines (for Multi-Search) This is my favorite feature! The tool allows to group your installed search engines by topic or the purpose (for example, social media search, reference search, etc) and then search multiple search engines at a time (all result pages will open in separate tabs). 2. Drag & DropZones for search This so-called “a new and innovative way to search the web” works the following way: Select any term on the page; Start dragging it; See “Search boxes”; Drop your term in any you want to search in: The “search boxes” are all based on search engines you have installed for your search box: Drag & DropZones can be customized via the tool settings accessed from the TOOLs menus. From there you can set the look and feel (for example, set the color) and customize the zone order (yes, by dragging them and dropping): 3. Quick Type Search The tool offers a highly customizable set of keyboard shortcuts to switch between the search engines: Assign a keyboard shortcut for any search engines; Group your search engines by topic and assign a keyboard shortcut for the whole group to search all those search engines at a time: Note: I wasn’t able to get all the shortcuts working. Some of them seemed to interfere with my Web developer toolbar, other with the default FireFox behavior, but some of them worked. 4. Realizable search box Have you ever thought that there should be some better way to adjust the look and feel of your FireFox search box? Then you’ll love this option: the ability to resize the search box: To sum up: The tool offers numerous ways to access your installed search engines: search the web using a search box, through the context menu, keyboard only, with the Quick Type Search popup, or using the brand new Drag & DropZones. With the numerous feature set, it is a must that all of them could be optional. The flexible settings allow to disable any of the features and customize those enabled (the settings can also be exported and imported). Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
